Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposium for Fundamental and Applied Research
11-13 April 2012

The Symposium is aimed at honours and postgraduate students and researchers who use, or may be interested in using, accelerated ion beams in fundamental and applied research. It will cover a wide spectrum of topics, ranging across physics, geology, medical science, and industrial applications. Bringing together experts and the community using accelerated ion beams and developing state-of-the-art instrumentation, this Symposium will provide a forum to build cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary links.
Location:
The Symposium will be held on the Australian National University campus, Canberra. The weather in April in Canberra is usually excellent.
Starting and finishing times:
The Symposium program will commence at 11 am on the 11 April, and finish at 4 pm on the 13 April.
Abstracts:
The deadline for contributed abstracts is 20 February 2012. The aim is that most abstracts will be selected for oral presentation, with priority given to student abstracts.
Registration:
The registration deadline is 5 March 2012. A charge of A$150 will cover the coffee breaks, lunches, symposium barbeque dinner (12 April), book of abstracts, and refereed web proceedings. Registration will open on the 23 January 2012, with details on the conference webpage and in future circulars.
Accommodation:
A block booking of accommodation on the ANU campus for attendees has been made for the 11 and 12 April. Costs per night are $90 (single), $125 (twin), $194 (2 bedroom:- double + twin). This accommodation will be allocated in order of registration, with preference given to student attendees. The conference webpage will also give information on other accommodation options nearby that attendees will be able to book themselves.

Financial support for student attendees submitting an abstract:
- No charge for attendance
- Free accommodation on campus at University House for the 11 and 12 of April
- Subsidy of travel costs of up to $200, depending on actual travel costs.
The number of fully supported student places is not unlimited. Student support will be allocated in order of abstract receipt, after registrations close.
Scientific program:
The program will consist of morning overview talks aimed at a wide audience, and short contributed presentations in the afternoons. These will include many student talks, which should be aimed at a broad audience. These student talks are a key focus of the symposium, with prizes for the best talks in different categories.
Symposium topics will include:
- Accelerated ion beams in Astrophysics, Environmental Studies, Geology, Industry, Materials Science, Medical Science, Nuclear Physics, and Particle Physics.
- Instrumentation related to accelerated ion beams and radiation detection.
Proceedings:
Refereed proceedings of all oral presentations will be published through EPJ Web of Conferences, and will be accessible for free download to researchers world-wide. This is indexed by ISI Thomson and Scopus, in the conference proceedings category.

The symposium acknowledges in-kind support from ANU, and generous financial support for student attendance from the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) and the Australian Collaboration for Accelerator Science (ACAS).
